In this week's episode, we open with high school Ryan's first day of school, starting with when he wakes up. In contrast to how we see him groggily getting up as a man in his mid-20's, high school Ryan is the epitome of a morning person (with zip!). Ryan drives to school (Which is a mistake- Freshmen are 15 in high school. I'll have to change that!) We see Ryan meet up with his best friend Jake for lunch, and hear of his plans for world domination, as well as his first date with Destiny. Life is good for Ryan! Jake complains of Ryan's over-zealous lust for life.
There's (another) montage- we see Ryan go through his day, and we find that he's not engaged in his classes, sitting near the back bored out of his mind. After school, he goes to cross country practice with Jake. After the montage, Ryan and Jake are driving home (I'll have to change that to walking.), and Ryan talks to Jake more about his date with Destiny. Jake complains more about how positive Ryan is, and Ryan counters with how amazing life is and how it's going to get even better in college and beyond. Ryan is certain that he and Jake will be best friends forever.
Next, Ryan goes on his date with Destiny. There's a bit of friction between Ryan and Destiny's dad, but the date goes well. Unfortunately, they lose track of time, and Ryan gets her home way past her curfew. This sets up a very negative relationship between Ryan and Destiny's dad, but Destiny is smitten with Ryan, and Ryan is absolutely head-over-heels for Destiny.
I remember how much fun I had writing these scenes. It was refreshing to have Ryan be a fun-loving, positive person who took life by the horns. One thought I had was to open the film with him in high school, then cut to him in his mid-20's, struggling with his depression. I do like the idea of getting used to depressive Ryan, and then contrasting our view of him by showing what he was like in high school- happy and social. I don't know what the best approach to this would be. What do you think?
